In Gaston Leroux's novel, 'Le Fantôme de l'Opéra' ('The Phantom of the Opera'), The Phantom of the Opera is a deformed former illusionist who is also referred to as the Angel of Music and the Opera Ghost. This episode can be considered as another adaptation of this story in which the Phantom seeks revenge for all those who had once mocked his work by blowing up the Paris opera house.

The Phantom's plan to blow up the opera house involves the kidnapping of the prima donna of the opera, the great Elvira with the aid of his assistant Krool. He plants to take her to his lair in the sewers so he can force her to sing one of his compositions. When Elvira hits a perfect 'Top C' note, the bomb inside the Phantom's great organ would detonate, thereby obliterating anyone who happens to be inside the opera house at the moment, including Count Duckula, Igor and Nanny.
